Doyle Lade - Fairbury, Player. Doyle Lade was one of the home state players to have made it to the 'show.' His talents were discovered early, as he toed the mound for numerous town teams in the southern Nebraska at a young age. Not only did he play for Fairbury but he pitched for Superior, Geneva, and others. At the age of 20 he signed a professional contract and spent time in the Texas League and the South Atlantic League. He pitched a no hitter against San Antonio and won the game 1-0. His home run was the only run scored. After 4 years in the service he made it to the major leagues with the Chicago Cubs in 1946. He continued with the Cubs and ended his career with 25 major league wins. He had a keen sense of humor and was a great guy on the field and positive force in the dugout. He loved playing the game and returned to Nebraska following his retirement. He was quoted as saying, 'i wouldn't take a million dollars for the time I had, the people I met and and the traveling I did in baseball. I saw all four corners of the U.S. and it didn't cost me a dime.' Doyle passed away in 2000. |
