John 'Jack' Bender--Cornlea, Player One of the most dominating players in Nebraska during the 20's was Jack Bender. Jack pitched for many teams during his career in Nebraska but Cornlea and Creston were home. Howells, Humphrey and others vied to get the services of the hard throwing Bender too. Not only did he throw BB's he could hit and hit with power. Jack played in several leagues including the Mid States, which included teams from St. Edward, Newman Grove, Columbus, Creston, Genoa, Lindsay and Leigh. On days off, Jack would sneak over to pitch for teams in the Madison-Platte league too. Quotes from articles include, 'Bender has Genoa's goat.' 'Bender yields goose eggs.' 'Bender throws no-hitter,' and the accolades go on and on. In 1927 he was solicited to play professionally with the St. Louis Cardinals for $250 per month. Back in those days in the 20's playing semi-pro baseball in Nebraska Jack would make $75 to pitch a game, and quite often the crowd would pass the hat collecting tips for the big left hander's outstanding performances. Jack was the youngest of 12 children, his father had passed away, and like many in his day, his help was needed to hang on to the Bender's farm. In spite of Cardinal scout Jack Ryan's pleading, Jack did not sign the contract, did not go to Danville, and never played major league baseball. The $250 a month would have been less than he could make playing semi-pro ball. 1928 led into 1929 the year the stock market crashed ushering in the Great Depression. Jack stayed in Nebraska, helped take care of his mother and the family farm and finished his baseball career where it began. Years ago Jack was given a Certificate of Appreciation for his contribution to the game by the Hall of Fame. It is high time he be inducted for his baseball accomplishments. He was truly one of the best. |
